Business Culture in the Arab World |
While on a business trip to the Arab world, men should restrict themselves to business attire such as suit and tie for business meetings, and lightweight, conservative dress during down-time. |
Alcohol |
Men's Attire |
Women's Attire |
Businesswomen traveling to the Arab world should do a little research on the particular destination country before embarking on their trip. In general, however, it is best for women to choose clothing with hemlines below the knee and high-cut blouses with sleeves. In some Arab countries, women are required to cover their hair while in public. |
Most countries in the Arab world strictly prohibit the sale of alcohol. Below is a list of countries and their prohibition status. We urge you to check with the embassy or consulate of your destination before you travel, as this list is only intended to serve as general information, and, as such, is neither intended to be legal advice nor comprehensive: Saudi Arabia: Complete prohibition with strict penalties, including imprisonment and lashes. Libya: Completely prohibits the importation, sale and consumption of alcohol. Qatar: While importation and public consumption or drunkeness is punishable under Qatari law, licences are issued for some hotel restaurants and hotel bars, and foreigners may apply for a permit to obtain alcohol. United Arab Emirates: Licensed, non-Muslim foreigners may purchase alcohol from special liquor stores. Tunisia: Bans alcohol except for wine, which foreigners may purchase in special tourist zones. Morroco: The consumption of alcohol is allowed except during the holy month of Ramadan. Egypt: Does not ban the production or consumption of alcohol. |
Israeli Visas |
Holders of passports containing Israeli visas will not be allowed in Arab countries (save Egypt and Jordan). |
No Business Trips During Ramadan |
Business trips to Arab countries during Ramadan is not adviseable, as business hours are limited and many government workers do not work. |
No Business Meetings on Friday |
As Friday, or yaum al-Jumu'ah in Arabic, is Islam's holy day, you shouldn't expect to do any business then. |
Business Hours |
In general, countries in the Arab world operate from 9:00AM to 1:00PM followed by an extended lunch/rest time and then operate from 4:00PM to 8:00PM. |
