Written Hindi

Hindi is written in Devanagari, which, like English,
is written from left to right. Unlike English,
Devanagari has no system of capitalization or
lower case letters. There is a uniform line at the
top of each letter which connects to the
proceeding letters. Apart from the basic
individual Devanagari letters, there are hundreds
of conjunction letters that blend two or more
individual consonants.

Due to India's British colonial heritage, English is
widely spoken in the cities of India. In India
today, English is the Lingua Franca of business
and communication between people who speak
different local langauges. The spoken English
there takes on a distinctively Indian grammar
and usage. Indian English includes phraseology
that harkens back to the days of the East India
